JPA’s brief was to create a fine-dining restaurant in the form of a traditional ‘kettuvalam’ rice boat as traditionally found in the Kerala state. The houseboats in Kerala are huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips but in earlier times they were used to carry rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port.

All thrity covers enjoy panoramic views of the adjacent backwaters, ensuring that guests have the sense of dining on board one of these traditional vessels. The layout and décor inspired by traditional rice boat with a thatched roof cover over a wooden hull. The garden entrance takes the form of a full-scale prow with an authentic cane roof and lanterns adding to the ambience.

The restaurant’s new, extended windows offer panoramic views over the water to the colonial warehouses of Fort Kochi, towards the open ocean and beyond – truly a unique experience among hotels of the region.
