FIRST CLASS
Inspired by China’s rich culture and spectacular landscapes

The prolific growth in China of new airports led to Air China commissioning JPA to create fresh designs for both their domestic and international First Class and Business (Phoenix) Class Lounges ranging in size from 400 to 3120 sqm including open-top versions.

The principle objectives were to create exclusive, luxurious, modern and relaxing environments that rival the top airline lounges worldwide but are very clearly unique and relevant to Air China.

This has meant combining a sophisticated, international design language with elements which are inspired by China’s rich culture and spectacular landscapes, all interpreted in an innovative and contemporary manner.

Soft blues and honey golds represent the changing colours of the sky and sunlight

The serene character of the lounges is achieved through colours and finishes palettes of soft blues and honey golds. Not only do they refer to the Air China brand colours but they also represent the changing colours of the sky and sunlight and their reflections in water. Each of these natural elements has positive connotations in Chinese culture and relevance to air travel.

The qualities of light, flow and energy are further expressed through the graceful character of the layouts which help create lounges that are easily understood on entering and are distinctive in look and feel. Bespoke lighting features accentuate key areas and circulation routes while indirect, restful illumination arrangements predominate in the main seating areas.

The diversity of lounge furniture and its settings provide opportunities for different activities, types of social interaction, group sizes and levels of privacy. Massage chairs are provided for those who need additional levels of relaxation.

BUSINESS (PHOENIX) CLASS
Utilising locally sourced natural materials symbolises the wonders of China's natural environment

Extensive buffets and dedicated dining areas which incorporate conventional and shared seating and tables settings cater to the strong demand for pre-flight nourishment.

Subtle, stylish and abstracted versions of Chinese patterns including some designed specifically for the project by one of China’s greatest living artists, Han Meilin, emphasise the connection between the past and present and link the lounge designs to JPA’s cabin designs for Air China’s First and Business Class aircraft, ensuring a consistent expression of the airline’s brand values throughout the passenger experience.

To date we have completed designs for eight lounges in five major airports with work on a ninth underway. Also included as part of the project are design manuals for both lounge categories. These offer guidance on the creation of lounges at outstations across country.
